She files to withdraw land from new mining leases for 20 years.
Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland has initiated the formal process to withdraw the Upper Pecos watershed from mining claims and leases for 20 years. The 165,000-acre area serves as the primary water source for much of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and is the headwaters of five local rivers and creeks. The public lands also serve as a prominent recreation area and a culturally significant resource for local Indigenous practices.
“For several years, members of the New Mexico delegation have introduced legislation for a permanent withdrawal of the Pecos watershed; only Congress can effectuate a permanent withdrawal,” the Interior Department stated.
By submitting this proposal for temporary withdrawal, Secretary Haaland has opened a 90-day public comment period to receive input on the proposal from stakeholders.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Secretary Haaland to seek God’s direction as she proposes water conservation actions.
- For Interior Department officials to be prudent in their stewardship of public lands.
